What are the functions of a steering return ring?

As a key electrical connection component in an automobile airbag system, steering return ring is located inside the steering wheel. It serves the core purpose of maintaining stable connections between the airbag, horn, multifunction buttons, and body circuits during turning of the steering wheel.
Functions of a steering return ring:
1. Ensure smooth transmission of airbag signals: The steering return ring serves as a lead wire or control line between the steering wheel airbag and the control unit. It ensures that the airbag can be deployed immediately after occurrence of a collision of the car, thus protecting the safety of the driver and passengers.
2. Maintain proper electrical functions on the steering wheel: It connects the horn, audio control, cruise control, and other buttons on the steering wheel.
3. Adapt to rotation of the steering wheel: When the steering wheel turns left or right, the wiring harness is able to stretch or retract freely to avoid winding or breaking of the lines (the maximum number of turns is usually 2.5 to 3).
Working principle of a steering return ring:
When the car experiences a frontal collision and the impact force exceeds the set threshold, the airbag control unit will transmit current to the airbag module through the spring, causing the gas generator to be ignited, and airbag inflation will be completed within 0.03 seconds to cushion impact on human body.
Symptoms of a failed steering return ring:
Airbag malfunction indicator lights up: The airbag malfunction indicator on the dashboard lights up, indicating a problem with the airbag system.
The airbag fails to deploy: A broken steering return ring prevents transmission of triggering signals. Consequently, the airbag may not deploy after a collision, thus affecting passenger safety.
Horn malfunction: If the steering return ring is broken or has poor contact, it can result in disconnection of the horn circuit. Consequently, the horn can become irresponsive when it is honked.
Steering wheel button failure: An internal wire of the steering return ring breaks, interrupting signal transmission. As a result, functional buttons such as volume adjustment, phone answering, and cruise control may completely or partially fail.
Turning noise: When the steering wheel is turned during drives, there is a "click" or friction sound, which is mostly caused by broken internal wires of the steering return ring rubbing against each other.
