What is the service life of a steering gear?

07-16,2025

The service life of a normal steering gear is about 100,000 to 150,000 kilometers. The service life can be influenced by different factors, including vehicle’s operating conditions and maintenance status, quality of components, and driving habits.

Factors influencing the service life of a steering gear:

1. Design defects and production batches

Some models launched in 2010~2012 were recalled due to potential hazards in the steering system. The models launched in 2012~2014 experienced concentrated complaints (including those about low-speed lag and power failure). The warranty of BMW models was once extended to 5 years/150,000 kilometers.

Specific models: For example, the 328i model equipped with a steering gear with a variable steering ratio has a much higher failure rate than other models.

2. Driving habits and road conditions

Turning the steering wheel to full lock: Turning the steering wheel to full lock frequently can damage the steering assist pump blades (hydraulic type) or the motor (electric type).

Bumpy road: Passing through bumpy roads without deceleration will exacerbate gear/rack wear.

Too low tire pressure: Too low tire pressure can increase steering load and accelerate aging of motor or pump body.

3. Lack of maintenance or servicing

Hydraulic system: If oil is not changed regularly, it can deteriorate and corrode seals, leading to leakage and power failure.

Broken protective cover: If the dustproof cover of an electric steering gear is broken, mud and sand will permeate and corrode the internal components, causing them to be unusable within a short period of time.
